Permanent Mission of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva
Melesia Martin
"The Fire Within"Ms. Melesia Martin is employed by the Guyana Fire Service and has been successful at breaking the stereotype that only male firefighters are allowed to work in the field. With the approval of her supervisors, she was permitted to work in the field as a service driver and became the first female driver within the service to drive the firetrucks as well as the ambulances. Ms. Martin enjoys the thrill of the job and was encouraged by her father, a former military Officer, to join the Guyana Fire Service.
Message from Ms. Martin to other young women: "No job is anti-female; it is in your scope to 'climb the ladder' and benefit equally, including equal salary".
