UNIDIR organized a regional workshop in Uganda in February 2020. Representatives of many African countries shared ideas to strengthen gender mainstreaming in arms control and disarmament. We learned about initiatives to improve understanding of gender perspectives in peace and security.

“Women are key players in arms control and disarmament processes. If left out disarmament processes will not succeed. It is important to capture the attention and support of women in such processes. Although, Uganda has supported reforms to bring more women into security structures, women are still few in the hierarchy. More should be done to support their participation in decision making.”

“We need to take action. Good strategies have been included in our country's action plans on small arms and light weapons control. However, not much action has been taken. It is high time to move from ‘words’ to actions.”

“Putting peoples’ lives in the control of machines is very dangerous. Usage of machines and robots should be well regulated.”
