Dr. Dawn Wright; Geographer and Oceanographer
In 1991, Dr. Wright became the first Black woman to dive to the ocean floor in a deep-sea-submersible vehicle. In 2022 she became the first and only Black person to descend to the deepest point on Earth, Challenger Deep. Dr. Wright, or “Deepsea Dawn,” works to encourage more minority and female students to consider a career in the sciences.
