Maria Toorpakai
When she was younger, Pakistani squash player Maria Toorpakai Wazir would disguise herself as a boy to play sport. Today a pioneer of women’s sport in the Pakistan-Afghanistan region, she became the first Pashtun female athlete. Standing against the Taliban, Toorpakai blazed a trail for girls in her country, and continues to fight for women’s rights through her foundation and the IOC’s Olympism 365 Commission.
