Miguel Luengo-Oroz

 

Miguel Luego-Oroz is Chief Scientist at UN Global Pulse, an innovation initiative at the Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary-General, harnessing Big Data safely and responsibly as a public good for sustainable development and humanitarian action. Miguel leads Global Pulse's data science team across a network of Global Pulse Labs in New York, Jakarta and Kampala helping UN system partners including WFP, UNDP, UNAIDS and UPU among many others, to innovate with data.

As the first data scientist at the United Nations, he has pioneered the use of big social, mobile and postal data to answer traditional development related questions.

 

Miguel is an "anti-disciplinary" scientist , with experience in multiple sectors from international development to genetics and artificial intelligence. He hold a PhD in biomedical engineering, MSc in cognitive sciences and MSc in telecommunications engineering and is graduate from Singularity University at NASA. Miguel is Ashoka fellow and the founding director of MalariaSpot.org - a platform that leverages videogames and crowdsourcing for diagnosis of malaria and other global health diseases.
